This image of Walter Johnson was taken in 1913 at the Polo Grounds in New York. Johnson’s Washington Senators played against the New York Highlanders who started using the Polo Grounds in 1912, but only after the last game the Senators played against them that year. We know it was in 1913 also because this photo was loaned by Brown Brothers to The Literary Digest for publishing an article about Johnson in its October 11, 1913 edition as seen below.
The back of our photo notes it was published by The Literary Digest, visible under the blackout, on October 13, 1913. Also just visible is the caption that was used in the article about Johnson throwing a baseball at a rate of 122 feet a second.
