These two snapshots were taken by a fan in the first game of a doubleheader between the Detroit Tigers and Cleveland Naps at Detroit’s Navin Field on Saturday, September 27, 1913. Navin Field had just opened the year before and later became known as Tiger Stadium.
We know it is that game based on the scoreboard. All the teams listed on the scoreboard were playing in those locales on that date. St. Louis is listed as “Here” on “Sun” which was indeed scheduled for the next day for a one game appearance which is why “Sun” is the only future game listed.
Cobb had a banner day. Combined in the doubleheader he went 6 for 7 with two triples and a double and he also stole three bases.
In the top photo it is in the bottom of the as yet scoreless first, with a runner denoted by the photographer as Ty Cobb standing on first base. The batter listed on the scoreboard is “5”, who was Veach, and there are two outs. The Detroit Free Press from the next day notes that in the first Cobb hit a liner to Lajoie at second which was knocked down. Lajoie is playing second in the photo and Ray Chapman is at shortstop.
In the second photo we note it is the bottom of the fifth inning with two outs. We see Cobb, hitting cleanup as batter “4”, gracefully rounding first on his way to a triple. The Detroit Free Press game commentary notes Cobb tripled in the fifth scoring Sam Crawford. Lajoie is playing second base and “Shoeless” Joe Jackson, the right fielder, can just be seen at the far right edge of the snapshot.
