Rube Waddell in Sportsman’s Park, St. Louis, 1909

Rube Waddel, a lefty, is on the mound pitching at Sportsman’s Park in St. Louis on June 26, 1909.  As referenced on the back, he and the St. Louis Browns faced the Detroit Tigers.  Waddell lost the game, 6-2 to the Tigers.

This is a fascinating view of the park. The original Sportsman’s Park opened in 1902, the newer version had just opened in the Spring of 1909. Here we see the new grandstand from our perch along the first base line. The old grandstand has become the bleachers down the line in the left field corner. A doubly rare image, Hall of Famer Rube Waddell in game action in the newly constructed Sportsman’s Park.
