Robert W. Tebbs was one of the preeminent architecture photographers of the early 1900s. He is well known for his images of plantations in Louisiana and throughout the South. But, before he shifted his focus to architectural photography, he was a sports photographer based in New York City in the first decade of the century.
Here is is own personal scrapbook of his snapshots of sporting events and figures from 1908. Included are a dozen images of the New York Giants, mostly taken at the Polo Grounds in New York City. Depicted are Fred Snodgrass, Roger Bresnahan, John McGraw, Joe McGinnity, Mike Donlin, John Barry, Al Bridwell, Art Devlin, Larry Doyle, Cy Seymour, Dummy Taylor, Fred Tenney and Hooks Wiltse.
Tebbs covered all types of sporting events that year around the country and the world. There are numerous images of athletes at the 1908 Summer Olympics in Paris, images of horseracing and of the 1908 Vanderbilt Cup automobile contest.
Almost of all of the images have Tebbs distinctive stamp on the reverse, evident by several images which are lose enough to be able to see the reverse and on the others by shining a bright light through the paper.
