A circa 1904 photo of Jack “Red” Kleinow. It was used for a 1906 Police Gazette supplement, and it is noted as such on back.
We know it is likely 1904 based on the uniform. The striped socks and white cap with black horizontal lines and white bill where only used in 1904. The “NY” lettering on the dark jersey was also used at that time. Note in the photo that Kleinow is clearly grasping a baseball in his mitt.
It is possible the photo was taken in Spring Training 1905 in Montgomery, Alabama. This image shows a somewhat similar ballpark with the players wearing the same 1904 uniforms that spring. It is possible it is Kleinow himself in the bottom row second from right in his striped socks and all white cap.
The photo itself is very large for its time, a full 8 x 10 with no white border. It also carries a Pictorial News Co. stamp on back mentioning its Fulton St. address. The company moved from that address in 1905.
All in all, one of the better photos from the first half of the 1900s decade.
