New York Yankees at West End Park, Houston, 1914

A rare view of West End Park in Houston, Texas in 1914 by George Grantham Bain. The New York Yankees trained in Houston during Spring Training 1914. Depicted are three non-roster invitees who were vying to make the club; Charles Rose, John Sullivan and Frank Ruddy. None of them made the team. Note the Dallas and Ft. Worth ad on the left field fence.

The steeple of the Antioch Baptist Church is also visible beyond the left field fence definitively identifying our locale. It was one of the first black churches in Houston. A major hurricane in 1915 destroyed the steeple.
