A nice example of Smoky Joe Wood’s grip on the baseball. This image came from the scrapbook of his teammate on the Boston Red Sox, Larry Gardner. The full body image of Wood displaying his grip was from the same scrapbook and and is taken against the backdrop of the grandstand at Fenway Park in Boston.

The images are on similar paper stock and were likely taken the same day. The only year that Boston had “Red Sox” on their white home jerseys was 1912. These images are almost certainly from 1912.

The Gardner scrapbook is shown below. Gardner’s family consigned the scrapbook and many other items to Grey Flannel Auctions and they were sold in the 2020s.
