Real Photo Postcard showing the playing field, looking out to left field of Columbia Park, home of the Philadelphia Athletics through 1908. The title on front identifies it as New York vs. Athletics.
The postmark on back is 1913, but the image was clearly shot in 1908 or earlier as that was the last year the A’s played in Columbia Park. The uniforms match the A’s from that period and the 1906 road uniforms of the New York Highlanders of the American League.
There is a chance the image is from the 1905 World Series against the National League’s New York Giants as the uniforms are a match for that as well.
In 1905 and 1906 the A’s had only two lefthanders on their staff, HOFers Rube Waddell and Eddie Plank. Take a look at the pitcher on the mound.
We see the pitcher’s bare left hand so it must be Waddell or Plank. Waddell pitched two games against the Highlanders at Columbia in 1906 and Plank one. So there is a 2/3 chance it is Waddell we see on the mound and a 1/3 chance it is Plank. A HOFer either way!
