Chief Bender, Bain glass negative and print, 1911 World Series

Bain original negative image

Here is an original glass plate negative produced by George Grantham Bain of Chief Bender at the 1911 World Series in the Polo Grounds in New York. Also here is an original period print from that negative which has been cropped to focus on Bender. Bain’s period stamp is visible on the back of the original print. It is rare to couple an original Type 1 print with the original glass plate negative with which it was produced.

We know it is the Polo Grounds based on the distinctive grandstand facade pattern. The A’s played against the Giants in the 1911 and 1913 World Series in the Polo Grounds, but the full collar that Bender is wearing in our image was worn in 1911, but not in 1913 when the A’s went with a collarless uniform. We also know it is the 1911 World Series based on the outfield wall advertising which matches a known image from the 1911 World Series with the home New York Giants wearing their black uniforms which were only worn in the 1911 World Series.
