Chief Bender – Conlon T206 image, 1909

Perhaps Bender’s best known photo. This image was shot by Charles Conlon and was used for numerous card issues such as the T206 “No Trees” and T5 Pinkerton cabinet.

Analysis of the scoreboard in the expanded image above determines this photo was taken on July 3, 1909 during the second game of a doubleheader at Hilltop Park in New York.  Chief Bender is putting in a bullpen session ahead of his start there on July 5th.  We know the date because of the four games for the American League shown on the scoreboard.  The game is in the third inning and Philadelphia is ahead 3-0, Detroit is also tied 1-1 with Cleveland in a simultaneous game at Cleveland.  Sure enough, the box scores from those games show that scoring pattern on those dates.  July 3rd was a Saturday and the teams were off on Sunday before playing two games on Monday the 5th.  We can just see the “M” in Monday behind Chief Bender and the bottom line indicates “2 games” which would be the doubleheader on Monday July 5th in which Bender would pitch.
