Charles M. Conlon sliding image of Boston player

This photo comes from the George Michael Collection which had a focus on sliding images. The image was captured by Charles M. Conlon whose handwritten annotation appears on back. Interestingly, Conlon does not identify the players involved.

The typed caption identifies the slider as Tris Speaker of the Boston Red Sox, Ed Sweeney as the catcher and Silk O’Louglin as the umpire on June 21, 1911. However, the boxscore for that date does not correlate.

It is likely the Boston player is Jake Stahl, as noted on the 1912 T202 card with the image.

Our image has been cropped and mounted to a board for publication. In fact, this exact piece was likely used for the Baseball Magazine article below.

The image was taken at Hilltop Park in New York City, likely in 1910 before the construction of the Armory behind the left field wall.
