This image depicts the aftermath of a scuffle between the Boston Red Sox and St. Louis Browns c. 1915 at Sportmans Park in St. Louis. The umpires, or perhaps policemen, are shown restraining the players.
Depicted left to right are:
Burt Shotten? of the St. Louis Browns, Heine Wagner of the Boston Red Sox, Herb Pennock of the Boston Red Sox, HOFer Bobby Wallace of the St. Louis Browns, Pinch Thomas of the Boston Red Sox, Jack Berry of the Boston Red Sox, Ernie Shore of the Boston Red Sox and perhaps Joe Wood of the Boston Red Sox.
This image was taken by noted St. Louis photographer Russell Froelich. It was in his personal scrapbook retained by his family for a century. The black dots, and their locations on the back of the image match the other known images from that scapbook. Froelich at the time of the image was the lead photographer for the St. Louis Globe-Democrat. He went on to fame an aviation photographer.
It is rare to find a close up image of an altercation on a Major League field of play during the Deadball Era.
