This photo was taken at the 1917 World Series at Comiskey Park between the Chicago White Sox and the New York Giants. We know it is Comiskey Park based on the overall composition of the stadium. We know it is the World Series based on the flags and red white and blue bunting all over the stadium, the scoreboard and reference to photos in the Chicago History Museum.
Remarkably, our image appears to have been snapped from the stands by a fan at about the same time one of the photos shown in the Chicago History Museum collection of 1917 World Series photos. Our postcard likely shows White Sox Captain Eddie Collins and Buck Herzog, the Giants’ captain, greeting each other during the warmups as they are photographed by a throng of photographers. Collins and Herzog are in the almost exact poses in our RPPC as the photo with Collin’s hand on his hip and Herzog’s arms split wide holding the bat which is covered by the photographers in the CHM photo. The players and pitcher are in similar positions in the two images and the scoreboard is exactly the same in the two images.
The Red Cross banner runs along the top of the scoreboard, the Fatima ad is evident and the teams are all listed to the right of the Fatima ad prior to the start of the game.
Now look at the inverted image of Collins and Herzog so we can read the etching from the negative. It identifies Collins and Herzog and says 1917 World Series faintly above their heads.
Below are a still from an existing video clip of the first game of the 1917 World Series as well as other CHM images showing the scoreboard and outfield front wall flags. All of these factors are present on our RPPC.
