These stunning snapshots were taken by a fan at the August 8, 1908 extra innings battle between the visiting Pittsburg Pirates and the hometown Philadelphia Phillies at the Baker Bowl.
The Baker Bowl as it appeared before the grandstand enlargement before the 1910 season which eliminated the ornate crenellations atop the roof at the edge of the grandstand. Depicted here as an artist rendering of it as it stood then.
This is a Getty Image of it as it stood during the 1915 World Series.
Note in our photo that the small structure within the ballpark is still standing as well as the ornate facade of the grain and feed storage building beyond right field. We can also see the edge of the immense wall that front right field.
The period annotations on the back of the photos note the game dates and the actual scenes depicted. The notes are confirmed in the game description in the next day’s Philadelphia Inquirer including the attendance down to the precise number of fans listed in the annotation. Note the crowd position as it exactly fits the description in the paper. Also note the stadium’s grandstand shadow, which appears in the Wagner photo and not in the pregame shadow. This means the Wagner photo was likely taken later in the game.
Wagner’s hulking presence at the plate.
