1900 snapshots of West Side Grounds in Chicago

The West Side Grounds as seen in c. 1900 in two snapshots. It is the only images of the two clubhouses in centerfield.

By 1901 the two clubhouses were covered over by an elevated railway that connected left field to right field for the fans. In a famous game here in 1896, Philadelphia’s Ed Delahanty hit four home runs. Before the last homer, the Orphan’s centerfielder, Bill Lange, humorously called time to retreat to the space between the two clubhouses. It was to no avail as Delahanty crushed yet another four-bagger. The players are shown here sitting on a simple bench as there was no dugout at that time. Also note the “bandit” fans perched on the white lettered advertising sign in centerfield.

The clubhouses are seen in this 1898 Chicago Colts image.
