A.J. Shumann double panel postcard depicting the New York Giants playing the Chicago Cubs on August 29, 1908 in Chicago’s West Side Grounds. This was a critical game between the league leaders and featured a Hall of Fame duel as the Cubs’ Mordecai “Three Finger” Brown prevailed over the Giants’ Christy Mathewson 3 to 2. The Cubs ultimately won the National League pennant over the Giants by a margin of one game. The Cubs went on to win the 1909 World Series over the Detroit Tigers and Ty Cobb to claim their second consecutive World Championship.
There was a huge crowd for this key matchup between the pennant rivals. Note that the overflow crowd has spilled out of the bleachers and completely ring the field on its fringes. Policemen had to be stationed around the field, they are visible in their dark suits, to keep the crowd constrained.
This is the image which serves as the backdrop on the Collection’s homepage.
